Our Cavalier Diamond Cultured Simulants are a new hybrid type of diamond simulant that consist of an external layer comprised of the elements found in real diamonds! A patented, process bonds a Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating to the prepared surface of the CZ core, each of which is hand cut to diamond proportions using GIA FacetScan Optical Scanners. Each stone is individually inspected to verify that the cut received is made according to exacting specifications with all facet angles carefully measured. The diamond like carbon coating along with precision faceting provide our simulants with the optical properties of a very fine quality natural diamond at a mere fraction of the cost of a mined diamond.
Carbon is the primary element in Diamond Like Carbon and in natural diamonds. The difference between these forms of carbon is the crystal structure, if present, and the carbon to carbon chemical bonds. Diamond and graphite are crystalline allotropes of carbon with cubic and hexagonal sheet crystal forms respectively. A very rare form of diamond is lonsdaleite which has a hexagonal crystal lattice. DLC can be thought of as a mixture of these crystal forms at the nano-scale along with amorphous carbon. Amorphous carbon, which means non-crystalline carbon, can also have a variety of structures depending upon the nature of its carbon to carbon bonds. While amorphous carbon has no long-range crystal structure, when used as the coating on our ideally faceted core, it provides for the same optical properties as that of a mined diamond.
